What Our Clients Say

Heron's transformed our backyard from a muddy slope into a tiered oasis with a retaining wall, interlock patio, and natural stone steps. Andrew was on site every single day. The crew was meticulous about cleanup. We get compliments from every neighbour who walks by.

Sarah M.
Brantford, ON

We hired Heron's for our full driveway replacement and front walkway. The 3D design preview was incredibly helpful — we could see the border pattern, the soldier course, and the colour contrast before they even broke ground. The grading and drainage work was flawless.

James T.
Brantford, ON

The retaining wall they engineered solved a drainage nightmare we'd had for years. Andrew explained the geogrid reinforcement, the drainage aggregate, and the weep holes in terms we actually understood. The wall hasn't shifted an inch through two winters.

From the Ground Up

Heron's Masonry & Landscape was founded in 2014 by Andrew Heron with a simple mission: deliver hardscape construction that lasts generations, not just seasons. What began as a one-man operation with a wheelbarrow and a trowel has grown into one of Brantford's most trusted masonry crews — without ever losing the hands-on, owner-supervised approach that defines our work.

We don't believe in shortcuts. Every project begins with a thorough site assessment, proper soil analysis, and engineered drainage planning. We excavate to proper depths, install adequate base aggregates, and compact every lift with plate compactors — not hand tampers. The result is hardscape that doesn't shift, settle, or heave after the first Ontario winter.

Our crew brings a combined 46+ years of experience across residential driveways, commercial plazas, municipal walkways, and estate landscapes. We've worked with every major paver manufacturer in North America and understand the nuances of each product line — from Unilock's permeable systems to Permacon's textured finishes and Techo-Bloc's modular wall systems.

How We Build

Every project follows a proven construction methodology refined over hundreds of installations across Southern Ontario.

Site Assessment & Engineering

Before any shovel breaks ground, we assess soil composition, drainage patterns, slope grades, and existing utilities. For retaining walls, we calculate lateral earth pressure and determine whether gravity construction or geogrid reinforcement is required.

We identify potential frost heave zones, poor drainage areas, and clay-heavy soils that require additional base preparation or geotextile fabric separation.

Excavation & Base Preparation

We excavate to proper depths — typically 8-12 inches for walkways and 12-16 inches for driveways — removing all organic material, topsoil, and unsuitable fill. We install a geotextile separation fabric where needed and build up with clean 3/4" crushed limestone aggregate in 4-inch lifts, compacting each lift with a plate compactor to 98% standard proctor density.

For retaining walls, we install perforated drain pipe at the base of the wall rock zone with daylight outlets to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup.

Precision Installation

Every course is laid with a 1/4 bond offset to prevent continuous vertical joints. We use screed pipes and straight edges to ensure proper surface drainage slope (minimum 1.5% away from structures). Edge restraints are installed with 10-inch steel spikes on 12-inch centres for maximum lateral stability.

Retaining walls are built with proper setback, vertical seam staggering, and geogrid layers at engineered intervals for reinforced walls over 4 feet in height.

Finishing & Quality Control

We sweep polymeric sand into joints, vibrate with a plate compactor with a rubber mat, and activate the sand with a fine water mist. This creates a hardened joint that resists weed growth, insect intrusion, and washout while maintaining permeability.

Final grading, sod or seed installation, and a thorough site cleanup complete every project. Andrew personally walks every installation with the homeowner before final sign-off.

Hardscape Construction
Built to Last

Large residential interlock driveway with decorative border accent and professional installation, Brantford Ontario

Interlock Paving

Interlock paving is the foundation of modern hardscape design — engineered concrete pavers installed over a compacted aggregate base to create surfaces that are beautiful, durable, and permeable. Unlike poured concrete, interlock systems flex with ground movement, resist cracking, and can be repaired or modified without complete demolition.

We work with Ontario's leading paver manufacturers including Unilock, Permacon, and Techo-Bloc to source products that match your architectural style, colour palette, and performance requirements. From permeable Eco-Pavers that reduce stormwater runoff to high-traffic Holland pavers for commercial driveways, we specify the right product for every application.

Applications: Driveways, walkways, patios, pool decks, front entrances, garden paths, courtyards, and commercial plazas.

Patterns: Herringbone, running bond, basket weave, circular fan, custom inlays, and soldier course borders.

Our Interlock Installation Process

Site Assessment

Soil analysis, drainage evaluation, utility locates, and grade measurement. We determine excavation depth and base requirements.

Excavation

Remove organic material and unsuitable fill. Excavate to 12-16 inches for driveways, 8-12 inches for walkways. Install geotextile fabric.

Base Construction

Build 3/4 inch crushed limestone base in 4 inch lifts. Compact each lift to 98% standard proctor with plate compactor.

Paver Installation

Lay screed sand, set pavers with 1/4 bond offset, cut border pieces with wet saw, install edge restraints with steel spikes.

Retaining wall with curved interlock garden path and landscaping, Brantford Ontario

Retaining Walls

A properly engineered retaining wall is more than a decorative garden feature — it's a structural system designed to resist lateral earth pressure, manage hydrostatic forces, and prevent soil erosion on sloped properties. In Ontario's freeze-thaw climate, inadequate wall construction leads to catastrophic failure within 2-3 seasons.

We design and construct retaining walls using segmental concrete block systems (Versa-Lok, Allan Block, Unilock Wall), natural stone, and engineered geogrid reinforcement. Every wall over 1 metre in height is designed with proper setback, drainage aggregate zones, and perforated weep pipes to relieve hydrostatic pressure.

Wall Types: Gravity walls (under 4 feet), reinforced walls with geogrid (4-15 feet), garden bed walls, tiered terrace systems, and engineered solutions for commercial applications.

Materials: Segmental concrete blocks, natural armour stone, poured concrete with veneer, and timber (for non-structural applications).

Natural flagstone patio with Japanese maple tree and water feature, Brantford Ontario

Natural Flagstone

Natural flagstone brings an organic, timeless character that manufactured pavers cannot replicate. Each piece is unique in colour variation, texture, and edge profile — creating surfaces that feel like they've been part of the landscape for decades. We source premium Ontario stone including Wiarton, Eramosa, and Credit Valley limestone, as well as imported sandstone and bluestone for specific colour requirements.

Flagstone installation requires a different skill set than interlock paving. Irregular flagging demands careful piece selection, tight joint fitting, and custom cutting with angle grinders and wet saws. Dimensional cut stone requires precise layout and levelling to ensure consistent joint widths and surface planes.

Applications: Garden pathways, patio surfaces, front entrance landings, pool coping, water feature surrounds, and accent borders.

Finishes: Natural cleft, thermal (flamed), sandblasted, and bush-hammered textures available.

Poolside patio with interlock pavers, curved coping, and surrounding landscape, Brantford Ontario

Poolside Patios & Landscaping

Poolside patio and landscape construction demands precision engineering that standard patio installation cannot provide. We build the hardscape surrounding your pool — not the pool itself. The patio surface must drain away from the pool edge, resist pool chemical exposure, maintain non-slip properties when wet, and accommodate thermal expansion from direct sun exposure.

We construct poolside patios with a minimum 2% slope away from the pool edge, integrated channel drains where necessary, and coping stones that create a clean transition between the patio and pool edge. Our paver selections include slip-resistant textures and heat-resistant options that stay cool underfoot during peak summer heat. We do not build pools — we build the beautiful hardscape around them.

Features: Cantilevered coping, bullnose edge profiles, integrated drainage channels, non-slip paver textures, and expansion joint detailing.

Materials: Unilock Beacon Hill Flagstone, Permacon Melville, Techo-Bloc Blu 60, and natural stone coping.

3D Design Visualization

Before a single stone is set, our 3D design service lets you see exactly how your finished landscape will look from every angle. Using photorealistic rendering software, we model your existing property, proposed hardscape elements, material selections, and surrounding landscape to create a virtual walkthrough of your project.

This eliminates the uncertainty of traditional 2D sketches and allows you to experiment with different paver colours, border patterns, wall heights, and planting schemes before construction begins. Changes in the design phase cost nothing. Changes during construction cost everything.

Deliverables: Site plan, elevation views, 3D perspective renderings, material swatch comparisons, and seasonal lighting simulations.

Included: Free with projects over $15,000. Available as a standalone service for $500 with full credit applied to your build contract.

House Brick Repairs

Brick veneer and solid masonry walls require specialized repair techniques that general contractors often mishandle. Mortar composition must match the existing mix (type N, S, or O), replacement bricks must match in colour, size, and texture, and repointing must be done with proper joint profiling to ensure water shedding and structural integrity.

We handle everything from individual brick replacement and crack stitching to full facade repointing and lintel replacement. Our colour-matching process ensures repairs blend seamlessly with existing masonry, preserving your home's curb appeal and resale value.

Services: Brick replacement, mortar repointing, crack repair, lintel replacement, weep hole restoration, and facade cleaning.

Matching: Historic brick sourcing, custom mortar colour matching, and joint profile replication (concave, V-joint, weathered, or flush).

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before starting your hardscape project with Heron's Masonry.

A standard residential driveway (approximately 600-800 square feet) typically takes 3-5 days from excavation to final compaction. This includes 1 day for excavation and base preparation, 1-2 days for base compaction and screeding, 1 day for paver installation, and a half day for cutting, edging, and final compaction. Weather conditions, site access, and project complexity can affect this timeline. We never rush the base preparation phase — it is the foundation of a lasting installation.
Interlock pavers are individual concrete units installed over a compacted aggregate base with sand joints. Unlike poured concrete, they flex with ground movement, resist cracking, and can be repaired or modified without complete demolition. If a paver settles or stains, we remove and replace that single unit. With poured concrete, cracks are permanent and repairs are visible. Interlock also offers superior drainage (permeable options), better traction when wet, and infinitely more design flexibility with colours, patterns, and textures.
In Brantford and most Ontario municipalities, retaining walls under 1 metre (3.28 feet) in height typically do not require a building permit. Walls between 1-3 metres may require a permit and engineered drawings depending on the municipality and slope conditions. Walls over 3 metres always require engineered design, building permits, and inspections. We handle all permit applications and engineering requirements as part of our service. During our initial consultation, we assess your property and advise on permit requirements before any work begins.
Pricing varies based on site conditions, material selection, and project complexity. As a general guideline, residential interlock driveways in the Brantford area range from $18-28 per square foot for standard installations, and $28-40+ per square foot for premium materials, complex patterns, and integrated lighting. A typical 600 square foot driveway with mid-range pavers, standard borders, and proper base preparation runs approximately $14,000-18,000. We provide detailed, itemized quotes after a free on-site assessment — no surprises, no hidden fees.
Properly installed interlock pavers on a well-constructed base should not shift or settle for decades. The key is proper base depth, adequate compaction, and quality edge restraints. We excavate to 12-16 inches for driveways, install geotextile fabric where needed, build up with 3/4 inch crushed limestone in 4-inch lifts compacted to 98% standard proctor density, and secure edge restraints with 10-inch steel spikes. We also account for proper surface drainage (minimum 1.5% slope away from structures). When installed correctly, interlock systems outperform poured concrete in freeze-thaw durability.
Interlock requires minimal maintenance compared to other hardscape options. We recommend: (1) Annual pressure washing to remove dirt and organic stains, (2) Re-sweeping polymeric sand into joints every 3-5 years as natural settling occurs, (3) Applying a quality paver sealer every 2-3 years to enhance colour and resist staining (optional but recommended), and (4) Prompt removal of oil, grease, or organic stains before they penetrate. We offer maintenance packages and can schedule annual inspections to catch any issues before they become problems.
Yes. Our brick repair and matching service includes sourcing historic or discontinued bricks, custom mortar colour matching, and joint profile replication. We maintain relationships with brick suppliers across Ontario and can often source exact matches for homes built in the 1970s-1990s. For mortar, we analyze the existing mix composition (type N, S, or O) and create a custom blend that matches in colour, texture, and tooling profile. Our goal is for repairs to be invisible — preserving your home's architectural integrity and resale value.
Yes. We stand behind every project with a comprehensive 5-year workmanship warranty covering structural integrity, base settlement, joint integrity, and drainage performance. Manufacturer warranties on pavers and wall blocks (typically 25+ years for structural integrity) are also transferable. Our warranty covers: paver settling or shifting due to base failure, retaining wall movement or failure, drainage issues resulting from improper grading, and joint sand washout. We also offer a 1-year maintenance visit at no charge to address any settling or adjustments after the first freeze-thaw cycle.
